Farewells, summer projects and exciting fall plans!

I hope this Shamrock News finds you all well: bike riding, reading, camping, swimming, playing with friends and visiting relatives.  Summer is a time for all of it!

A few exciting changes are coming to Grant School for the 15-16 school year.  Congratulations to Ms. Jimenez who was hired as a Teacher on Special Assignment at Petaluma City Schools.  She’s part of a team of four TOSAs who will support our teachers as we move into a 1:1 iPad environment with students in the fall.  We are so excited for her new adventure.  Ms. Hurd has taken a job at a middle school in Kauai, Hawaii.  Wow!  Aloha to her as she heads across the Pacific!  Cindy Kerr, our school psychologist, will be working with a PCS partner, South County Consortium, as their psych.  Diane Baines, music teacher, is enjoying retirement, and Elizabeth Robertson, music teacher, has taken a position with a nonprofit in the bay area providing music instruction to schools there.   Jerol O’Hare is off to junior high with her inclusion student.  And if you’re been under a rock for the past few months, Mrs. Haugen is moving on to Valley Vista School.  Welcome Ms. Dunnagan, our new principal.

Summer projects are underway at Grant!  The school is being painted and the fire lane will be resurfaced and repainted with fun games thanks to Fund-a-Need at our Auction this year.  Traditional student desks and chairs have been removed and our new learning spaces will be filled with modular tables, rolling chairs, stools and other creative pieces to meet the needs of our students as active, collaborative learners. The entire district wireless network has been upgraded and work is near completion.  Huge kudos to Lori Deen, director of technology, for tackling this need and seeing it through!

But wait, there’s more!  This August, all our Petaluma City School’s students will add a powerful new learning tool to the classsroom–iPads.  Thank you Petaluma for a successful Bond measure that funds this addition to our district.  Teachers are training through the summer with an iOS Summit by EdTechTeam upon return in August.  There’s a lot to learn and amazing apps to discover and implement.  Soon we’ll be offering parent information opportunities at the district office and school sites.

If that isn’t enough to tide you over until our return, I don’t know what is!  Have a great summer and be safe!
